Safia's Story:

I am originally from Afghanistan. I left Afghanistan because my husband disappeared. After a few years of waiting, he was never found, and my brother-in-law tortured me and threw me out of the house. I couldn't abandon my daughters, so I had to flee Afghanistan before things got worse. I snuck away from them and went to Indonesia. I encountered many problems and went through many sleepless nights worrying if I would be found and tortured again or whether my daughters would have a hard time adjusting. Before moving to the US, we remained in Indonesia for five or six years. My two girls and I moved here about a year and a half ago. Being by myself in a different nation proved to be extremely challenging for me. To provide my daughters a better future, I faced tremendous suffering. I endured while sobbing and emptying my heart. My dish, Biryani, is originally from Pakistan. This meal was taught to the Afghans by the Pakistanis when they migrated over, and the majority of Afghans now enjoy eating it. My girls suggested that I put this dish in the competition because it is one of their favorites. This dish was created with their happiness in consideration.

About the Dish:

Biryani is a mixed rice dish made with Indian spices, rice, and usually some type of meat or in some cases without any meat, and sometimes potatoes.
