Maryam's Story:

Because of the Syrian war, 23-year-old Mayram immigrated to the US in 2016. She had always desired to work as a pastry chef in a bakery. She always brings treats, such as cake or pastries, to gatherings or weddings so that guests can sample them. In 2019, Mayram relocated to Pittsburgh from California along with her parents, three brothers, and other family members. She is a student at CCAC right now, enrolled in the nursing program.

About the Dish:

They are essentially the Middle Eastern equivalent of pancakes and are filled with a variety of delicious ingredients. Typically, street sellers in Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Morocco, and Egypt prepare Atayef (also known as Qatayef). These days, they can also be found in bakeries, and some people even make them at home. They are so well-liked that having Atayef throughout Ramadan feels mandatory.
